Occurs in the north of Eurasia and in some places of North America. Breeds on the islands and banks of rivers and lakes, on the sea coasts, sometimes on swamps.
In Ukraine, it breeds in the western regions, the Middle Dnieper and Desna. Regularly wintering in the south and on the Dnieper, occasionally occurs in winter in the ponds, or bays on the rest of the country.
The main food is fish. On land feed on earthworms, beetles, insects, while discarded fishery wastes supplements natural food at sea.
