Northern shoveler
Latin: Spatula clypeata
Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae
The Shoveler breeds in various regions across the Northern Hemisphere, including parts of Europe, Asia, and North America.
In Ukraine, it is primarily a migratory species. Although it may breed in some parts of the country, it is not considered a resident species. It prefers shallow waters of open lakes and wide floodplains.
It feeds on small crustaceans, mollusks, insects, and their larvae, which the bird filters with the help of its tongue and beak lamellae. It may also occasionally consume fish larvae and snails. Along with animal feed, ducks eat seeds and vegetative parts of aquatic plants.
