It breeds in wooded areas near water bodies in northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia.

In Ukraine, it is primarily found in the western and northern parts of the country in freshwater bodies with wooded shores, such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. During migration, it occurs everywhere. It regularly winters near the sea coast and in water bodies deep inland.

Its diet primarily consists of fish, as well as crustaceans, and insects. It hunts by diving underwater.
