It breeds in northern Europe and Asia. It migrates to southern Europe, Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia during the non-breeding season.
Inhabits forest swamps, flooded fields, riverbanks, lakeshores, and coastal mudflats.
In Ukraine breeds primarily in the Polissia region and the western part of the Forest Steppe. During migration, it can be found everywhere.
It primarily feeds on insects, worms, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates. It forages in shallow water or mud, using its bill to probe for food.
