Little grebe
Latin: Tachybaptus ruficollis
Order: Podicipediformes
Family: Podicipedidae
The Little Grebe’s range extends from northern Europe to regions of the Middle East and South Asia. It inhabits freshwater lakes, ponds, marshes, and slow-flowing rivers.
In Ukraine, it is a common breeding species found in freshwater habitats, primarily in the central and southern regions, with populations migrating south for the winter.
It mainly feeds on fish but also consumes a variety of invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans, and small amphibians. It hunts by diving underwater.
