Latin: Regulus regulus

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Regulidae

The goldcrest inhabits the coniferous and mixed forests of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is typically found in spruce, fir, and pine forests, but during migration and in winter, it can adapt to other wooded habitats.

This is the smallest bird species in Ukraine. It mainly inhabits the coniferous forests of Polissya, the Carpathians, and Crimea; during migration, it may also be found in other regions.

Its diet primarily consists of small invertebrates and their larvae. In winter, it also feeds on seeds from coniferous trees and other plants. Because of its small size and high metabolic rate, the goldfinch must constantly search for food, even when singing or building a nest. In 12 minutes of starvation, the bird can lose up to a third of its weight, and in less than an hour, it can starve to death.
