Mandarin duck

Latin: Aix galericulata

Order: Anseriformes

Family: Anatidae

Mandarin duck, is a species of duck native to East Asia. The bird can be found in China, Japan, Korea, and parts of Russia. However, due to human intervention, the duck has been introduced to various parts of the world, with large populations in Europe and smaller populations in North America.

In its native range of East Asia, Mandarin duck lives in wooded habitats near water bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes with dense vegetation.

Its diet typically consists of seeds, grains, aquatic plants, insects, small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.

It is not native to Ukraine. The Mandarin duck has been introduced to the country as an ornamental bird. Specimens observed in the wild may have escaped from private collections or intentionally released into the wild. This couple in the photo was spotted in a Kyiv park.
