Latin: Sitta europaea

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Sittidae

Eurasian nuthatches are widespread throughout Europe, including Great Britain, and most of Asia from Siberia to Japan.

They are mainly found in deciduous and coniferous forests, woodlands, and parklands. It nests in tree hollows, however, unlike woodpeckers, it is unable to dig a hollow itself, so they uses old nests of woodpeckers or occupies natural tree cavities.

They can often be seen hopping along tree trunks. It forages by probing and searching for prey in crevices and under bark on tree and branches. The nuthatch uses its strong bill to extract insects and larvae from the wood. It also consumes seeds, nuts, and berries, especially during the winter months when insect availability is reduced.
