Common raven
Latin: Corvus corax
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Corvidae
The Common Raven is the largest member of the corvid family and one of the most intelligent birds in the world, found across the Northern Hemisphere. Ravens thrive in both natural and human-altered landscapes. They can often be seen soaring over fields, forest edges, or perching on tall structures in rural and urban areas.
In Ukraine, it is a widespread and familiar presence throughout the year, inhabiting a broad range of environments — from mountain slopes in the Carpathians to the open steppe and forested areas across the country. It is predominantly sedentary and can be observed even during the harsh winter months.
Their diet is extremely varied, including carrion, small animals, grains, insects, and food waste, which makes them well-suited to surviving near human settlements and landfills.
