It is commonly found in woodlands across Europe to western Siberia.
In Ukraine, the Tawny Owl is a resident breeding bird and is considered to be one of the most common and widespread owl species in the country. Most often, it inhabits flat and mountain forests. Also found in urban parks and gardens, where it can find suitable places for nesting, such as tree hollows or buildings.
Its diet consists mainly of small mammals, such as voles and mice, as well as birds, earthworms and beetles.
